The problem was that the measure was not drastic enough. They got in again and wiped the entire server clean.

Since the server was behind a firewall, all ports are closed. Even they could inject some script on the server to run, they can't really use the server for anything. I guess they got pissed and just wiped the server.

Sorry to hear the bad news Wes. I caught the earlier message you had posted about your business servers. Hopefully they weren't too hacked or brutalized. :( Don't know that there is anything I can do to help, but the offer is open. Good luck getting everything back up and running.

On a related note, a forum I help admin was recently victim to a complete wipe by someone who supposedly guessed the main admin's password!! How disappointing to have so much lost because someone needs to flex their e-peen.

I had back up on the game server, but the game server HD crashed awhile back. After I got the replacement server up, never got a change to setup the FTP for the backup to work.

Hey Wes, if they just deleted the files on the HD, can you use one of those data restore programs? I had my MP3 folder deleted on my computer 2 years ago and downloaded a free data restorer(undelete) and was able to get 95-98% of my MP3s back.

Did they format the whole HD or just delete the info?

Just delete files. Including the Windows directory. Can't boot anymore. It's on a 2U rack mount server with SCSI drives running RAID 5. I believe it is possible to recover some of the files if we manage to get an OS up without overwriting too much space on it.

wes i just had a 200gb hard drive recovered (for $300) from a very professional company (compared to a couple others i tried before) called "lowcostrecovery" http://www.lowcostrecovery.com/
i had tons of old audio files on it that i could not replace, got back 95% of everything from physically damaged drive, so highly recommended... maybe theres hope, i could even donate a couple dollars to recovery effort if needed.

when that happened to my forum, i was gonna try recovery but i found out they actually zeroed out the databases on me so there was nothing to recover in my case - hopefully theres something there, thats 10 years of forum!

Two options:
- Boot from USB drive that has OS with file recovery utility
- Install another hard drive and install OS to that drive while ignoring other drive

In either case, use the OS on other partition and recover the files; this way you do not affect the actual data integrity of the RAID5.

I have some tools like GetDataBack, which should work; but I won't be around a computer to help after 6pm today (until next week some time)

I think booting from USB drive would be the easiest way to go. However, I did have trouble getting those Dell rack mount server to work with with USB drive as the primary drive.

yes, i agree. the easy way to do this is to attach system to a monitor, hit F12 at boot time, and tell it to boot from USB device directly. if you try to boot any other way, you will have problems.

also, it will be a slow process to scan the drive. but when you consider the value of almost 10 years of posting at MyUnreal...that is a TON of data to lose.

Alternately, you could set up a PO Box and we could all send you our old computer parts so you could build one!!! ;) I'd bet collectively we could send supplies for one KILLER server!!! :p

I'll also mention that a format alone does not kill the data on the HD either, so if the data was "killed" by a format, then it's still there and data recovery is possible.

Thx everyone. Server is not an issue. We already started using VM to do server nowaday. We already have a big server consolidating many old smaller servers.

For the hacked server, it's currently still down sitting in the colocation place. I just have to drive down to NYC and take it home and work on the recovery one day.

What I was referring to was collecting funds to have the hard drive sent to have the data recoverred professionally so we can get our old posts back. There's a lot of info that was lost, that I would go back to time to time and reference, not to mention all the fun and memories. As NYGrrrl said earlier, she had a hard damaged hard drive that she was able to get data recovered from. We are talking about a hard drive that was only deleted. With my small knowlege of hard drives I know that a professional should be able to recover as much if not all of those posts. Am I wrong in assuming that??

Should be fixed. I changed "Registered Users" group to have permission for custom signature and to upload avatar.

I think this was setup before so that after ~30-60 days, it would be best to remove this permission from Registered Users group, then create a new "Veteran" user group that will have these avatar/title permissions, and setup a promotion that after ~60 days, 30 posts, 10pts reputation (everyone starts with this) you are automatically made into a 'veteran' and obtain these rights....maybe this is something to return to.

you should use Internet Options in the Control Panel to delete all of your cookies. NOTE: This will kill all of your saved logins for all websites.

I believe once you nuke the old cookies, it will fix everything

Another way that might fix it if you don't want to delete all your cookies is to specifically LOG OUT once you log in. This will erase your cookie for this forum. Then when you log back in again, select remember me and it should keep you logged in.

You can also go into c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Cookies (it's a hidden file so you have to have hidden files set to visible) and look for <username>@myunreal.com.

Erase any files like that and log in again.

basically, the rep system will work for you, it will log rep for the other person as a "grey" square, and no actual points will register until your personal rep points are above 10.

What was the old default for maximum posts per page? I seem to remember it being rather high, or maybe I just had it set high, but I want to say it was 50 - which isn't a current option under the User CP. I'm 99% positive my old max posts per page was 50.

Also, it's a shame all the albums were lost, too. There were a bunch of pictures from the LANs on the site in the album section. I'm sure someone has those somewhere, though.

it is 50 on my end. click User CP. click Edit Options. see the section 'Number of Posts to Show Per Page', and set to 50. should have several increments of 10 shown, ending at 50.

i just noticed also that all search engines list the forum home page as 'bbs.php', and that seems to be how the forum is indexed everywhere. there is a setting in the control panel to change this...but it says you need to hack an additional file which i do not have access to.
