BFG released a 9800GT 1GB low power VC.
You can get this card at around $100 USD right now :)
More to come?

I am wondering if they start to realize that they have reached a practical performance max and that most people are no longer looking for something that can get 150fps rather than 100, but one that can get 100 and use less power, need less cooling, or be able to fit in an ultra-compact case....

Yep but you need at least a card like that to play Battlefield Bad company 2 and a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor.

One issue is that display screens are getting SMALLER, not larger. 1920x1080 is about the max for most widescreen HD monitors and TVs. Most are 1440x900. That's only 1.3 million pixels vs the 2 million of the largest 'square' monitors. For now, screen areas seem to have peaked. Also, the major bottlenecks seem to be in processor speed, internal cache, and FSB and RAM speeds (not many games are 64 bit so the full bus width of your quad core screamer is not being utilized just yet.)

What ever happened with that physics chip they were working on? That's where your CPU probably bogs down, trying to come up with vector paths for all those lovely 3d flying objects to follow.

I think that only accelerate the physic because it was saved somewhere in a chip and not running in software mode under windows and the chip add special 3D particle effects with physX enabled.
AMD/ATI cards don't have the chip but there is a way to run it slowly in software mode. The chip is on Nvidia based cards only.

Be sure your card support it in hardware mode and not software.

But they're only 2 weeks out!

Real weeks or pre-release weeks?

Baldie man! Whassap wit getting the TOTL? I did that once with a pair of Canopus cards WAY back when and it took my lowly 240 line resolution Quake games up to 800x600, but it was still something like $400 for the two cards that were easily supplanted about 1.5 years later for a single $150 card....

Granted that the card lines have not done such radical movement in a LONG time, but still.....

Not only that, but you should have bought this sucker in the winter... It looks like it will keep you warm!!! ;)

The FERMI cards should be selling by the end of the month. It's what I've been waiting for. If I think they cost too much, it should at least drive down the cost of something older.

Maybe you need the flaccid cards instead of the fermi's

Up and runnin', install pics:

Once again the reviews on NewEgg are n00bed up! Everyone was saying how HUGE the 5850 is, but it is actually smaller than an 8800GTX.http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/88/resize2o.jpg (http://img696.imageshack.us/i/resize2o.jpg/)

Plenty of room in my Armor case.

Now, to pull the 2 7800GT's and replace with the 8800GTX in box 2:

Talk about a tight fit! This is an Antec Solution 180 case and the card firmly touches the hard drive cage. Still, both cards fit in their new home. Just for S&G's I cranked the 5850 fan to %100 and LORDIE!! Damn near as loud as a dustbuster! No exageration, they are really close! I'll have to game on it a bit, but in a quick run of Futuremark the fan never got audible.

Well well well... You can get a GTS 250 at nearly $100 too.
It is nearly the same performance as a Radeon 5770 (4 fps under)
and a bit more than the Radeon 5750.
The only thing is you don't have DirectX 11 support on both 9800 GT and GTS 250 but Radeon 57xx support it.
I don't think that change something in the next 2 years but well:D

The GTS 250 is supposed to be exactly like a 9800GTX+ but using less power and the price is cheaper. Good to know. :D

The EVGA is at 105.87 CAD after mail-in rebate but it is 512 MB of memory

This 5850 vidcard is doing great. My PC however.....the dual core e6600 OC'ed to 3.0GHZ and 2GB of RAM are really getting their butts kicked by this card. While playing a Source game or FO3, my RAM utilization on 2 gigs is about 90% or more - same with CPU, both cores 90% or more. To put it in perspective, they used to be about 40% max on CPU and 60% max on RAM. Doubt I'll get a quadcore CPU for this mobo, but I am getting another gig of RAM next week.

3G of ram works well with what I have Bald...

You may also want to see if the 3GHz keeps everything in sync nicely (I had some problems with some games when I had my 6600 at 2.8Ghz, so I just lowered it back to stock... 2.4 I think, and it works well.

Oh, also XP+4G did NOT work well. It glitched constantly, so I bought 2 sims and can't use one... :(

Most games still work well, but this machine is due for a replacement soon... I think it is a good...4 years old! 10/24/2006!

Talking about E6600... Do you know why Intel called their recent 3Ghz Dual core E6600? Now all is ****ed up. You have discontinued E6600 Core2 duo and regular E6600 intel dual core at $84.
