Video Conversion/Rip and Burn?

Hey guys,

Simple question, what is the best proggie (both free and pay) for video conversion?

I have an HD cam now and I would like to be able to convert.

I would also like to be able to rip my collection down to some HQ vids that I can put on my home server and pack the originals in storage.

Any opinions?

Also, video formats and recommendations would be welcomed.

Depends on your play back format, play back device, and storage medium. My HD cam allow me to export both DVD format and HD format. To give the video to relatives, i simply export them as DVD format. For myself, i export them in HD format and use some free tool to convert it into AVCHD format and store them onto normal DVD. PS3 and most BR player can play it.
