B.O.T. - Before the crash I noticed the active users numbers slowly going down. About a year ago, we were over 100 active users. Every month it went down just a little. Right before the crash it was about 72.

Since the crash, the numbers have been going up at about the same rate they were decreasing before the crash. (other than the initial large group signing back up.) We are now up to 48 active users and growing. That means approximately 2/3 of the active users before the crash have found their way back. Some of the 1/3 that are missing, I would suspect have just moved on. Others are just taking a little longer to get here.... :p

I think the numbers will continue to grow steadily. JMHO :D

the initial reason for coming here is long gone, ad although TF2 filled teh gap a bit, it still does not have that same custom map/mod feel that UT99 did.

Epic ruined their deal with 2K3 and only a moderate salvation with 2K4. And for UT3 to come out WITH NO VOICE is just plain silly.

But as we get removed from the game that started it, we are all getting old and crotchety and more settled in our ways. Some will come back, some won't. I just don't think there will really be any game that wiill get us all back again, or attract many new posters to a site called "My Unreal" ;)

That was supposed to be UT Revolution. UT99 scale, weaps, maps, etc. ported to the 2K4 engine. It was working - I played Liandri in the alpha version and it was cool - but for a reason unknown to me it died. :(

I place all the blame for the downfall of UT on Cliffy B, that whore!

He took something that worked and turned it into crap, by trying to make it a console based game with both Quake and Halo attributes. When UT 2003 came out, I bought it, and after playing it for only 3-5 days, I thought, what a pile a horse crap the game was.

UT99 was great because it was a straight up fighting game, where you could go toe to toe with a fellow player, without all the added crap(ie vehicles, those stupid pills, and those stupid special abilities if you can remember how to activate them.

I am actually going to start playing UT99 again and look for some servers. I am getting sick of game developers releasing what they want and not what the customer is looking for and pissing and moaning about how no one is buying their crap!!

Well, it might take a while, because unfortunately, the vast majority don't think anyone is a "savior". However, there are a lot of idiots out there who seem to find solace in this idea, it gives them a logical explanation why things are going in a different direction that they find uncomfortable. It gives them a reason to, without really thinking outside the box, or thinking at all, shoot ideas out of the water that are out of their scope of understanding. That's not the type of thinking that America was founded on, but it's what we've ultimately become.

It's quite sad, really. Shooting people out of the water before you give them a chance.

Anyway, totally off-topic. I'd still love to see the original post database restored, post counts and join dates returned :\

I don't think that would have saved UT either. I still believe it has nothing to do with UT itself or the weaker versions. The reason we can't go back is because now you have a 1000 online pc games /xboxs/wii/guitar hero/ps3 etc all online taking up peoples time vs 1999 you basically had 3 decent online games and people stuck to their favorite. Plus back then it was the 'in' new cool thing to play online. Now everything is online.
Even if somehow UT3 was perfect for all it still wouldn't go very far.
I think most of us can agree TF2 was near perfect but it still faded out pretty quickly.Nobody wants to play the same game for a year and people can't spend every night on their pc for 3 hours. There is always something new to try.
I feel lucky and grateful to share the early times when everyone on the server was friendly and it was a real community.

Cor, very insightful! I think you nailed it on the head. It is unfortunate, we had a lot of good people back in the day...

Ninjahedge

I think that is pretty much on as well. The lack of good SMOOTH gameplay (even using modems) was rare. The community support was VITAL (No Zeit, no fanbase!), and the lack of a console that could come close was also it.

Now all the kiddies play console. Every time I go to Steam Forums and try and talk about L4D or TF2, I get a bunch of people talking about console issues that have little or nothing to do with the PC version.

The bad thing is that release dates, user intefaces (especially finding a net server), community support tools (like mapmakers and editors) are all getting hampered by this.

But we do get Achievements!!! :crosseyed: (I have to say, they can be fun, but at the same time, I am not an XBL kiddie here. My worth will not be measured by my "gamer score"... :p)

I don't think we will get one game, aside from the addictive MMORPG PtP games, that will bring a community together.

I DO, however, see more people on through Steam and, sadly, Live. I think that would be the next phase, not a game to get together on, but several, and some place that will let us know Sab is playing HL2 ep 2, and that G$ is on TF2.....

I am still around just busy with life is all.

We really do need a either a game with some legs like UT99 or we can just bring it back and continue to play UT99. TF2 was fun for a while but I got hung up into some other games and personal stuff where I didn't and still don't have the time to play as much as I did in the past.

As Cor said I am gratefull and lucky to have the memories from the past playing UT99 into the late night hours.

If I got some time and everyone is playing the same game then post on here and hopefully I can jump in and play.

Politics aside your all great gaming peeps, just don't understand how this country can continue to spiral down the rabbit hole and not very many people taking notice to busy defending one side or the other. I am not too happy with either side on spectrum right now either you side with the 3 year old or the 5 year old can't really say one is better then the other at this point. All seem to be greedy out for themselves forget about the people of this country I want my piece and will do anything to get it.

Now is the time for a 3rd party to shine through.

RE: Gaming, I want to point out one possible flaw in Cor's thought: Remember how insanely popular the Unreal Co-op server was? Even when UT2003 was out, people were tearing it up. Even pulled some old school folks out of retirement, when other games like BF1942, Rainbow 6 and others were definitely out there, definitely with multiplayer.

Just look at the buzz that releasing Doom on the iPhone has generated.

I dunno. I still think that, with the nostalgia and perfection that UT99 offers for a gaming model, if somoene simply reskinned the game to make things look less polygon-ish, folks would jump all over it. Sell it for $5 and make some moolah.

The thing is, Epic/etc. would want to use the latest and greatest engine to get those graphics, which means you're forced to use the physics in said engine...and you're screwed, once again. UT2003/4 all over again.

Re: the economy - The great deficit scare returns (http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2009/06/11/deficits/index.html)

One of the (many) meaningful points in Reich's piece:
In this respect, national budgets are like family budgets. It's dumb for an indebted family to borrow more money to take a world cruise. But it's smart even for an indebted family to borrow money to send their kids to college. So too with the Obama budget. Public investments, just like family investments, build future wealth. They allow faster growth. Our indebtedness is like a venture capital investment - the initial surge to get the wheels of growth moving.

Naysayers can't just point at the deficit and say "Bad!". For their case to stand on its own, they need to demonstrate that investing in our own infrastructure won't lead to future increases in GDP and, thus, tax revenues to pay off the debt.

History isn't on their side.

A true 60hz would not be the reason for the lag Sab. you might see a slight stutter, but the only way you would be able to perceive a lag on a 60 is if it did not STAY at 60 and missed a frame or two a second.

That is what I find. If I get a smooth STEADY 30 I am fine, but going between 30 and 60 your mind has problems filling in the gaps and you start to feel like it is not right.

The other thing is response time, if you get a bit of blur and your sharpness is reduced because of motion, it may look off too (especially in games that are not LOOKING to motion blur. I had that with GuildWars).

As always, YMMV, but I would just like it so that a card could be geared to do things like drop detail automatically to keep you at a certain STEAADY framerate.

But I do not know how they would eb able to monitor that and still keep the lag to a minimum. It would need to calculate the load, adjust the settings, and render the scene in less than a frame or two so you owuld not perceive a control lag.....

Next generation!

I believe Vsync is kind of what I am talking about. It deliberately tries to set your framerate to one that is in sync with your monitors refresh rate (so you do not get tearing and the like).

Problem is that it does slow thnigs up a bit and CAN really slow them down if the load is too high and you cannot get the FR needed to sync. I usually turn it off and deal with screen tearing (Fallout 3)

I'll try to get to 'er sometime this week then. Though L4D is fun...

(And since our XBox360 broke again, I can't play Burnout Paradise for awhile... it broke 2 days before the Big Surf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ro2apT7hYw) Island update (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lHjaoAGXfM) was released too... grrrr....)

I'm out this weekend and next due to two road trips. However if I get some free time during the week I'm always game. Do we have a server that we can use, otherwise, the servers that are out there are heavily tweaked usually requiring tons of additional downloads and are rarely regular unmodded style games.

Haha! I'm still up for it. Just need server information and an agreed upon day. I could try to host if needed, though I think I only have around 700k upload speed.
