Not sure exactly when it came out, but the Fallout3 expansions that were previously downloadale content only are now hitting the shelves at WallyWorld, Best buy, ect.! Very Happy

I was against buying and DLing the stuff from Games for Windows Live since when I installed the GWL client to play the demo for Warhammer nuked my FO3 saves. I was freakin frustrated x 10.

SoutheastRage linked me last night to sites that sold a realworld package to play Operation Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, and Lookout Point. I checked BB's site and saw the goods for sale. I went to BB today and the expansions(called 'Game Add-On Pack') for OA and the Pitt on the shelf for $19.99. The 2nd AOP of Broken steel/Lookout Point are due at the beginning of August...once again - Very Happy .

I bought the first and on the box it clearly states 'This content requires Fallout3 to play.' When I tried to install I got an error that Fallout3 could not be found and that I needed to reinstall. In the expansion's defense, it does state that I need patch Fallout3_v1.4.0.6 to play. I installed the patch included on the DVD but it was a no go.

WTF Again!!

Crap!!

After an hour on the forums others complained here and there about the same but no clear solution was spelled out. Most complained that the STEAM version was not compatable with the hard copy.

I DL'ed the stand alone Fallout3_1.6_English_US patch from fileshack or something and installed it. Still no go.

GRRRRR!!!

I then launched the regular FO3 Steam game and noticed I had to reset the graphics and mouse sensitivity. Still grrrrr.

Restarted again and got a crash.

Kicked the cat for a bit then retried.

BING!!!!

Installed now and after a crash restarting it worked.

I am not an hour into it and have had 2 other crashes but it works!! Still, less crashes than a previous FO3 patch so I am good.

So far, the game is fun, but no radio stations so the wonderful music I have grown to love is absent. It also reminds me of Crysis a little to.

Game on!! Got the 2 expansions, 2 in August, and a 5th named Mothership Zeta(or something) due in October along with a GOTY edition that has it all.

This is a great game!

I believe the save games are moved with the games for windows live. I didn't loose my save games, just had to move them back to the "my games/fallout3" folder.

Also I use a disabler that removes Games for windows live from the game and your PC.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1086

Of course this may break other games you have that may use games for windows live.

Everybody seems to thnik they need to do this kind of crap.

I think I will wait for the expansion bundle pack before I go and pay $20 for 8-10 more hours of play.....

Bald_Yew

I realize I could get all of them in the GOTY edition, but I wanted to play the expansions now. I don't mind paying 9.99 per expansion if the content is good.

Operation Anchorage - not so good. Super Linear with little story and the special items gained are meh at best. Also, it is super easy when you are level 20 and have buffed your stats and perks.

The Pitt - Really good! Good story, forces you to make tough choices, can get pretty good loot, the steel mill looks great. Again, easy if you are level 20 with 100 repair, 100 lockpick, 100 sneak, 100 energy, 100 small guns, ect. ect.. Still, very fun.

Oh yeah, and if you haven't played FO3, STEAM has it on sale this weekend for $24.99! :)

I've REALLY wanted to play this for a couple of months. It just hasn't made its way into my budget yet. I'll probably be waiting until they release a version with all of the DLC included (if that happens). That might not be until around the time for New Vegas, though...

Of course, I'll be getting it on the 360 if possible... Microsoft has poisoned me with their gamerscore system. My gamerscore isn't even that high, but after a few years of gaming on the 360 I can't stand a single-player experience on any other console or PC because I feel like I need that goal of achievement points. If it's online and multiplayer, owning others is enough reward that I don't feel the need for achievement points.

Look around for the Level hak. I found it useful (It let me pregress to level 30 or 40, I chose 30 because they said there is still a glitch if you run out of places to put skill points, you can't get out of skill menu!!!).

The monsters actually scale up a bit with you!

I, unfortunately, got bored with it after not getting the kiddies what they wanted, and collecting all the Nuka Cola and other tasks, but it was a great trip (probably 100+ hours) getting there! I still hav enot finished the main plot! (scared that game would end too quick like people have said) and I still have not found all the bobbleheads!!!!

I'm currently at 121 hours, and I haven't touched the expansions yet(all installed though).

I started with 9 intelligence, so with all the skill points i expect to max out around lvl 25.

I hacked the weight limit because I was killing too much time running loot back home. Here is the command:
player.setav carryweight 10000

Leveling creatures takes some of the danger out of the game and takes away from the challenge. Wish they would drop that policy. Anyone remember Dragon Warrior? It was a level grinder but it gave the game a certain satisfaction.

Ninjahedge

Thing is, there IS a certain balance to the critter leveling. You run into things that are scaled +1 or +2 from whateevr base they use whe you enter areas like the MireLurker (is that the crabs?) pit by the memorial or when you visit the Nula Cola chick....

I do wish it was more stable, with only some areas scaling with you, otherwise you stroll in there later with nothing to do with your flaming lawnmower blade!!! ;)

(BTW, that carry thing is handy, but I usually settle for my sidekick now, the black chick from the citadel. I still end up going back and forth a LOT. But the one thing you learn is to buy as much ammo as possible when you can, not only do you NEED it, but it is better than currency sometimes (you can't shoot a bottlecap...) and it weighs NOTHING!!! ;)

o ty so damn much :D I'm not as die hard as some but this will make it more attractive to play.

Do any of these haXxX work with the steam version of FO3? I just learned, at level 11 last night, that to repair an item you need a 2nd of the same item in your inventory. Everywhere I go it seems I'm looking at 210/210 weight and I'm always overburdened. I took ninja's advice, and putting all my chips on lockpick/repair, then i'll go for science next..
I wasn't too impressed when I first got it, but now that I'm playing more, I find it's pretty addictive- also I just went into the jefferson memorial- with all the water my poor 8800gt almost gave up on me..

LOL, I'm playing with a 7800.

You might want to use "player.srm" in the console to repair items. It will use your repair skill and not require another item. I believe it's supposed to take caps but that doesn't seem to be the case with my game.

Darkness is way too dark for me so I also use a pipboy mod that brightens the light:

Ninjahedge

I just turn the screen brightness up. Never had a problem with the dark (7950 GT/KO first).

Things that net you more in teh beginning are always best. Look for the stuff that will help you make/pick/repair and do other things. That will save you $$ in the long run.

Then do things like strength enhancement and the like (since they do not help you get EXP faster or anythnig).

BTW, don't waste your time on the EXP boosters UNLESS you have the level 30 hak. Otherwise you run out of levels (if you really like exploring) and waste a few skill slots on things that are no longer useful!

When my comp crashed with XP on it I lost a lot of stuff and one of which was my Fallout save games. I may have been able to recover them but I wasn't all that concerned. I kinda wanted a reason to start over... with Fallout as well as with Windows. I wanted to get the bobble head back in vault 101 with + medicine. I also read a little of the strategy guide and it said to go full force with lockpicking and repair since they are really important and used most frequently. I just wish I had gone with more intelligence to get more skill points per level.

Run to Rivet City early and get the intelligence bobble head and you'll get the payoff every time you level up.

Hey Ten
Site was down, or at least my link to this here forum was down, so I figured Wes packed up shop! What's funny is that I picked up the epic super pack on steam for cheap, and was playing unreal tournament and unreal II recently, so I'm in that UT99 frame of mind. For a game I pirated when it first came out (ut99), I've paid for it like 3 times over in bundles.. Anyways Ninja told me on steam that myunreal was back up, so I mosied on over and registered again- but it needs a minimum of 3 chars for a username now, so I picked this imaginative alternative!
-G$
ps- I found my 1st bobblehead (unarmed) in some random cave somewhere- I didn't even know they existed.. I do want to play the game again, but instead of being a goody two shoes, I want to try the mean approach! Enslave megaton!

I am just pissed at the rads taking over the tower.

I was nice to everyone, got a ghoul mask and everythnig (complete with spy hat makes Krueger look jealous!) and all they do is run EVERYBODY out.

Right now I am in full armor, running around with a plasma rifle, gatling laser, lincoln rifle and some other goodies. I have that black military chick with me and she is fully armored and carrying a gatling with over 6000 rounds (Rounds weigh NOTHING, so buy them up as much as you can when you can).

It got a bit boring for me... But I have to finish it up. I am still pissed there was no other way to solve the whole Soylent Green subplot.....

Actually, last weekend I started playing evil. It is fun and makes you think about when the best time to cap someone is. I'm killing EVERYONE eventually - it is quite a chore TBH. Also finding a few new things here and there. Noteable last weekend were walking from the Minefield to Vault 92 and ran into The Roach King. Just a dude in the wide open on top of a throne on a low hill. His throne is made from a playground rocket, a folding chair, 2 tractor trailer tires, and an old clock. He talked like a woman, and wore a dress, but had porkchop sideburns connecting to his mustache. o.O I also kinda saw the alien ship get shot down. When I fast traveled to the Minefield, I took about 10 steps NW, and heard a boom above me. I looked up and saw a trail of black smoke . Thought it was wierd but didn't think it was the alien ship until I found about 10 Alien blaster power cells scattered around in front of me. Didn't see that happen the first time.

Ninjahedge
08-28-2009, 12:39 PM
Hmmm, have not been able to find the alien yet. I did find the computer that listed one crashing though.....

And I did everything out of order, so I already befriended the kids at Lamplight before you have to go there to get to the whatsamahiggie place....

I was also fortunate to get the ghoul mask, but the arse killed everyone!!! You try to make the right choice, but you end up hurting people anyway. Evil game sometimes!

I undertook a personal mission in Oblivion similar to yours, Bald. Instead of killing everyone, my mission was to steal everything there is to steal in the game.... It turned out to be bigger of a task than I first thought. I fenced all of Imperial City (including things with 0 or 1 value) and then gave up...

I finally bought Fallout 3. I'm definitely playing evil... not because I want my character to do evil things, but, gosh darn it, I steal anything and everything of value. And those -5 karma hits really add up. I'm bottomed out already and I've only done 3 or 4 main quests. I've done quite a few side quests, though. Also thanks to whoever mentioned running to Rivet City first thing for the Intelligence Bobble. I remembered that and made sure to do it and it's paid off.

Bald_Yew
08-29-2009, 07:05 AM
Yup, intelligence bobble is good, but the initial run to Rivet City is to help boost you to level 4 so you can get comprehension. I have read about 120 skill books, so with the comprehension perk I have gained 240 stat points instead of 120.
And don't sweat the karma. If you really want to change it just give the beggars water and donate to the church. Endless supply of redemption there...

Sigh, oh man, I'd be embarassed to tell you how much time I've just spent cleaning out the entire L.O.B. Enterprise building of everything of value (including anything that's a crafting component), making trip after trip back outside at .5 mph because I'm overweight to go back to Megaton and return to loot more. Oh how I wish there wasn't a weight cap.

I didn't even mean to get held up here. I'm just frustratingly trying to find a way to the Arlington Library from my closest waypoint, Marigold Station. But once I find a bounty, I can't leave until I've pilfered it all..... dang my OCD when it comes to collecting things.

You can walk there pretty easily from Rivet City, and Megaton(Rivet City is Closer though). Just bypass the metro tunnels.

As for completely clearing out areas, wow, you are in for a looooong game! I've gotten to a point wher almost all weapons, most food, and all armor are left without a bother. The only things I get without fail are ammo, 44 magnums, laser rifles, and sniper rifles to repair my blackhawk, victory rifle, and metal blaster. That, and stimpacks.

Yeah, I figured... I'm an obsessive collector. Every game I play, I collect everything I deem could EVER be useful in ANY manner. I'm obsessive about leveling up and getting ahead of the game so I never have to worry about getting stuck. My brain won't let me play otherwise. If I pass something up that I could conceivably use somewhere down the line it will bother me endlessly. Same goes for exploring. If I come across an area or building new to me, it's imperative I explore it top to bottom. I have to see every nook and cranny. If I pass on through, I'll bug myself out wondering "What if? What's there? Could there have been something I passed up? I should have looked."

Something I'm finding to be a problem, though, is finding merchants with enough caps to sell to. I'm clearing them out left and right. I suppose it's a byproduct of my OCD collecting, I always have so much to sell. I've begun to just start storing sellable items in my locker in my house to sell later.

I'm also stealing obsessively. If I see something I want, I'll wait and wait and wait and maneuver endlessly for the perfect opportunity to take it. My brain just won't let me pass up something that I might need later. Even though the logical part of my brain tells me that by this point, sheesh, I'm pretty much set (for at least the main quest line). I could never pick up ammo or anything again and be able to finish with plenty left over, I'm sure.

Edit: Oh, by the way, do you have any suggestions or information about finding ways to sell off things? The merchants I know currently run out of caps pretty fast and I'd like a way to sell off more of my disposable stuff so as to improve my house. Do you know any that get more caps faster than others? How about cap respawn rates?

Hehe, I just realized what a great Republican I'd make if my real life tendencies were anything like my gaming tendencies. Scrooge to the max. Maybe I could be a ruthless businessman, taking advantage of every opportunity. Perhaps I should stick to FPS, away from open-ended RPGs where I'm going to drive myself nuts trying to play the perfect collector.

I think my psyche will break if I ever get to level 20 and I get the Explorer perk.... I'll be locked away for weeks pilfering every single location. And for what purpose? None, I suppose, other than to satisfy my unsatiable need to be prepared for anything and everything and be absolutely dominant in the Wastelands...

The only things I kept taking were ammo and drugs. they weighed nothing and it was handy at the end to have 280 stimpaks.

I am dissapointed at the end being, well, the END (as I said before) and not allowing you to wander anymore w/o any main task. I don't want to have to buy a new game just to go strolling around what I already have (although I have gotten 90% of what is able to be gotten...)

I would also like to learn new stuff. Maybe it would be better if you had to use what you learned or lose it. You do not use energy weapons for a week, you forget how until you spend more exp to get it back. Maybe it would only cost you 1/2 as much to re-learn something, but it seems to make sense. It would also remove the need for a level cap....

BTW Chrol, don't bother w/explorer. You might as well just Wiki the map and print it out. there are other things which I found useful (solar powered, for one).

Well, we'll see if they ever bundle these guys......

I'm about 35 hours deep now, and I'm absolutely loving this game. Caps are no longer a problem. I've found enough merchants throughout the Wastelands that I can pawn off my spoils whenever I need to. Plus, I've found this game is more about trading than amassing caps. It's all give and take.

I'm having WAY more fun with the side quests than the main quests. I find the main ones pretty boring. I'm only up to the point where a certain pivotal someone bites the big one at 35 hours. I just did the Big Town quest, that was pretty fun. I'm slowly learning to stop picking up every craftable component, but it's hard. Good news is that my carrying capacity is up to 320, though... The only problem I'm finding now is ammo - I'm running out pretty fast on my favorite guns. For instance, I have thousands of 10mm ammo, but not so much on shotgun shells or .32, mostly cause my favorite weapon to use is the Lincoln Repeater. It feels the most like my favorite gun ever (Lightning Gun). I just wish the bullet trajectory was perfectly straight. I'd never use VATS if that were the case, because aiming on your own is just so much more fun.

I'm also hunting down the Behemoths. I've found a pretty easy method for taking them down. I've crafted about 50 Bottlecap Mines by this point, so I just find the Behemoths, use a Stealth Boy if they notice me, lay down about 12 mines, and then lead them into it. Works pretty well.

If you get The Pitt DLC one of the perks for completing it is access to an ammo press. You can convert one type of conventional ammo(or scrap metal) to another. They have varying exchange rates, and if I remember correctly, I converted about 3000 10mm to over 700 .44.

chrol
09-13-2009, 05:52 PM
I need to get The Pitt, then. Now that I have Lincoln's Repeater, I'm running dangerously low on both .32 AND .44. I hate resorting to my 10mm SMG or my Chinese AR. I also need to work on my Energy Weapons skill, because I'm extremely stocked on all ammo in that regard, too. And since I've been evil and opportunistic (taking out stray Brotherhood of Steel guys) I have lots of Gatling Lasers and Laser Rifles. Oh, and Protectron's Gaze, too. I'll need to get whichever DLC ups to level cap to 30 to put a lot of points into Energy Weapons, though, because I'm almost maxed out on level.

Bald_Yew
09-13-2009, 07:07 PM
The protectoron's gaze fires what, 5 beams? There's also a special laser rifle called the Metal Blaster in the Pitt that fires 9 or so. The kicker with both of those is - Don't use them in VATS - you don't get the multi crit chance in Vats. Use them in standard and that's 5x crit chance or 9 x crit chance respectively.

You can buy Microsoft points and buy the DLC's through GFW Live for 9.99 each, or get the hard disk copies for Operation Anchorage/The Pitt and Broken Steel/Point Lookout at Bestbuy for 19.99 each. I went the hard copy route cause GFW Live pissed me off.

.....Or you can get the GOTY with all 5 DLC's for 69.99 in a month or 2. you should be able to xfer your save file and keep yur stuff.
