Obvously a spambot. Now they're registering only to leave a link in the profile rather than spamming. Much harder to detect without manually approving each member. I found four other spammers, using their profile for linkbacks:

phottoshop
vzone832
juissomia
BMchugh51

I am almost convinced RJohn84 is one also, but not 100% - although his name format roughly matches BMchuch51, and the email address is jacked up. Others had several forum hits with zero-post profile and spam links.

All but that RJohn guy are banned.

im pretty sure ninjahead and freightliner are spambots too, ban them just incase

We've had LevitraES and Phottoshop on our forum too. I'm checking for the others now...

The phottoshop guy actually posted a message. One of the mods got to it before I did.

My guess is the bot registers on all the forums with the spam profile info, and the spammer simply goes down the list of activation emails and activates each name. Then perhaps another bot returns to the valid user name and posts. Or maybe there is even a bot for the second step as well.

The key here is that at least some of the registered email addresses must be real, otherwise the spammer would not have activated the account. Another clue is that the email address was set to private.

What I did was kept the account in the system, banned him, erased all the spam info and made his email address public so other spambots could find it.

The other purpose of registering members on forums without posting is to get access to all the public email addresses on the member list.

i set them to banned, remove all the spam links in their profile, leave the email alone so they can never register another account under this name or email again (forum is set to deny multiple registrations w/same email addy).

what is the purpose of setting the email address so spambots can find it? just to overload the box? i would assume they would throw away the mailbox within a couple of days and/or weeks anyhow.

Perhaps. It probably does no good to do that. I just found it odd that they would set the email address to private, and wanted to counteract that action for whatever reason.

I think the forum default is set to private and it just uses forum defaults.

Our forum software default is set to public. I wish it was not that way but it is. Which means that private is a deliberate setting.
