Computer specs worth it?

Hey guys long time no talk.

Long story short as its my last year in college I'm looking at getting a desktop. I was going to build one myself but a friend of mine is looking to sell his near new rig (he built it 2 months ago).

With the specs he listed he's asking for 400$ but he's willing to negotiate a little.

phenom II x4 955 3.2ghz
4gb ram
radeon 6770
windows 7 64 bit

Looking at Newegg just the hardware alone that he listed would run you near 300$ (this is without any real hunting).

Basically I'm wondering if this rig is worth purchasing.

It's for the whole machine, Zorak. Feline will post some more specs soon, I expect, including drives.

Just the parts listed, he is selling the whole rig for 400. Its a 240ish gig drive

Sounds cheezy, but go onto Dell and see what you can find in their bargain bin.

I have not found that much of a savings in putting together your own bargain machine as compared to the MFR leftovers. At least this will give you an idea of what you could get for $300 elsewhere.

I was going to try to price out a similar machine custom built from new parts, but New Egg is being slow to access for me at the moment.

I'd estimate that you could build a comparable or slightly better machine for ~$450-500, not counting the Windows license and with a bargain case. The Windows license is worth over $100 retail, but since you are a student you can probably pick one up for much less (I am not sure what they charge now, used to be $20 something).

That said, I do not know what to consider fair depreciation for PCs, but I don't think you could build a PC of those specs for $400, especially if you count the Windows license as retail.

What motherboard? if you want it to last you need to be able to upgrade the cpu, memory. USB 2 or 3? etc
