Nero alternative

Nero burning ROM has become bloatware. Anyone have any sugestions on a replacement? Needs to work with a SATA drive and backup console images.

Anyone know a good free converter for m4v (apple QT) files to standard AVI?

I tried a search, but they are all annoying trial period software that only gives you things like converting half the vid......
