#5: The Redeemer - Unreal Tournament

When it came out in 1999, the unreasonably awesome Unreal Tournament was the anti-Quake. Whereas Quake ran at an extremely fast, almost disorienting pace where you lived for about 30 seconds, fragged some people, died, and respawned, UT was quite a bit slower, especially for a game focused on adrenaline filled deathmatch (though unlike Quake it wasn't all about deathmatch; assault mode, anyone?). However, due to the slower pace, you could focus more on the action and the ridiculousness of it all, and this gave the game an over the top feel about it that Quake lacked. This ridiculousness and slow pace transferred well into the weapons. There was the insane Eightball Launcher (you could load up to 8 rockets or 6 grenades; sadly this was nerfed in later installments), the wonderful sniper rifle, and who could forget the original but useless Bio Gun? But though all of UT's weapons were quite original, one towered over them all: The Redeemer. This weapon still strikes terror into the hearts of gamers everywhere today. A rocket launcher that launched NUKES, when a player on your team (or even better, YOU) obtained the Redeemer, you jumped for joy... and cried tears of abject terror when the other team got one. The aftermath of this wonderful thing was incredible to watch in 1999... and still carries the same impact today. Primary fire launched the slow moving messenger of death in a straight line, while secondary fire launched it and allowed you to control it! That's right, controlling a nuclear missile. How cool is that? There are a few downsides to the weapon, as it moves quite slowly and you are liable to be killed if you use the secondary fire in enemy territory, but in the end, it's easily worth its spot on the list.

:D :D :D

I kinda liked the Shock Rifle better....

And the 'deemer was bested by the Dr. Strangelove 'Deemer "Yeeeeehaw!".

Same, I was thinking the SR was more innovative (ala the shock combo) than just another "OOOOOH BIG EXPLOSION" gun. I mean, the BFG and the Redeemer pretty much fall into the same cliche of super-powerful one-shot area-of-effect instakill gun.

Oops - I think I pretty much just described the SR as it was in UT99 :P (albeit it would be a super-powerful two-shot area-of-effect instakill gun).

Sort of, but it wasn't a FaF gun. You had to time it and aim to set off the shot. As people got better at it, you would think it was a gimme, but that took a while (and in some cases, keybinding).

As for the others?

10. I have not found the alien blaster (or the crashed ship!!! I needs to look!)

9. The lancer is fun, but definitely not the best by any means.

8. Halo? 'nuff said.

7. ?

6. BFG... meh.

5. Deemer.

4. A POWER SHELL????? What? You gotta be kidding me.

3. RL on Quake. Not the greatest, but probably cool at introduction.

2. GRAV GUN!!!! Very fun, but I think the Portal gun was better!

1. Zelda? A bow and arrow? Meh. You might as well just call the fire-mushroom on Mario the best of all time. What about the power pill in Pac Man?

C'mahn!

Bio Gun....useless? My ass. Load it up fully charged and it instagibbed anyone...

and yes, NH, the power shell. that was almost like a heatseeking redeemer. obviously, you didn't junk out on SMK like almost everyone i knew growing up. the multiplayer was almost as good as Goldeneye was back then!

My personal favorite is the laser bomb in Duke3D. You could set it up where you couldnt see the laser line so they could never see it coming.

shift, played it on the SNES AND the NDS.

I just don't consider it one of the best weapons of all time. A homing missile? I believe there were others in other games that were similar. Mario just made it fit their motif.....

it wasn't just any homing missle. it was the one end-all, be-all weapon of that game in particular.

getting the red shell was like getting the ace of spades in a card game. there was no higher. it was the pinnacle "ender" weapon. if you got it, it was almost guaranteed that you were going to tag your nearest enemy without a doubt.

that seems to be the point of almost that entire writeup.

Except if they got the, what was it, the star? The super speed invulnerability.... ;)

yeah, and guess what's waiting for them 15 seconds later when that goes away? :D

In the Gamecube Mario Kart (not sure about the N64 Mario Kart) theres a blue spiked shell that takes out the person in first place. I'm not sure if that's more useful or not than a red shell, but with red shells at least you have the chance of getting three.

you only got that in single player mode on mario kart and super mario kart. red shell was in both single and versus.

They've introduced it to multiplayer in Mario Kart Double Dash (GC). Depending on the skill of the players around me I might want it more than the red shells, but only if the person in first place is the only racer I know I'm contending with.

Regarding the bio comments above - it may not be useless but I'd say it's the least useful gun of 99. Its usefulness in an active firefight is detracted, as its primary is extremely hard to use effectively against a skilled opponent, and its secondary takes precious seconds to charge up - not to mention, you still have a hard time landing that huge goo gob on a good player.

At max ammo of only 50 in 2k4 as opposed to 100 in 99, it is largely useless in 2k4, but not to the degree in 99.

Really, though - given the choice, would you take bio ammo over ammo for any other gun? I know I certainly wouldn't, and this especially holds true in 99 where even the Enforcer can be used effectively, much unlike the AR of 2k4 (except for its 2 nades, its useless).

i disagree. i think it is more useful than an enforcer.

the goo and hammer were my most powerful weapons.

Hammer? Really? I dunno, maybe we just come from different mindsets. I'm extremely competative, and although I never played 99 competatively because 2k4 was my era, I can't see the hammer being effective in competative play, as you'd be put down before you had more than, at most, one chance to get in close. This is, of course, not to detract from you as a player or your skill level. I'm just saying maybe we come from different two different worlds of gaming, and as such, have two different playstyles.

I'd bet you're one of the haters of my playstyle. :P I'm all about the hitscan whoring. That's what I loved about 2k4 - shock primary, the LG, and mini secondary.

i don't 1v1 like you do. i like playing TDM.

I was never a 1v1 fan. In fact I was quite fail at 1v1. I played TAM, and later TDM when I realized TAM wasn't going to make me any better than I had become.

Bio wins against a constant dodger. But, if you hear someone loading a bio hold your dodge for when they launch it. It's truly deadly.

omg, that thing kicked ass.

I was a junkie for that weapon! Especially around corners. Set like 4 of them up, have someone chase you around the corner ( in the meantime you jumped over the trip wires) and boom! Next thing you know, you are being called cheap and lame.

The best is when you just set them up randomly and while you are fighting someone else, you get a kill from out of the blue lol

no way.
Hell, in UT99 I had ninja ears for the deemer. If I just spawned with no weapons and heard a deemer near me, I would snipe it down with my enforcer. Dam thing was an accurate gun!

Couldnt do crap with the goo gun cause if you load it up, a good 6/10 times, you kill yourself along with the enemy. It was only FAIRLY good in CTF-Coret. Plop it on the flag or in the hallways

Golden Eye had 2 of the best weapons. The deployable laptop gun, and the gun that seen through walls.

Wait, that might have been Perfict Dark.

The most fun was knocking one out of the sky with a sniper rifle from halfway across one of those huge sniper maps...idiots would fly around looking for a single player or small skirmish to nuke and suddenly--BAM--bye bye!
