Just got this email.....

Dear DarkSideofOZ,

Someone has tried to log into your account on MyUnreal BBS with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address:

All the best,
MyUnreal BBS

Any idea who that might be and why they might want access to my account?

So someone ran a script to scan the forum for user names, then attempted to use a brute force pass hack to make a grab at the users passwords... but on this site? why?

I'm overseas in Lausanne. Difficult to do a lot from my side. I did find a new user that was a spammer, they could be the source of pulling the members list. They're banned now.

But, generally, it would seem as if someone is bruteforcing the server to try and gain access to some accounts. Some forum settings may need to be tweaked but it's going way too damn slow for me to adjust them right now.

How do we know anyone is real now? Lausanne? Really?!?!? Sounds like a place a hacker would make up! :D

but on this site? why?

They probably don't know there are so many more fun things to hack!

If you knew where I worked, you'd understand why I was in Lausanne, CH!

Lausanne? Switzerland?

06-25-2013, 10:33 PM
Yes, Muscat. I sometimes am there, because my business is headquartered in Cheseaux. Are you familiar with Lausanne?

Dude, I can totally drive over if you are in Lausanne. I'm about 3 hours away from Switzerland.

If you want to see how badly these botnets/spammers try to get in, just look at the "Who's Online" area. http://myunreal.com/online.php

Everywhere you see 'guest' with a yellow yield sign to the right of their username, you can almost assuredly run their IP at StopForumSpam and it'll come back blacklisted as a bot. At the time of my writing this, we had bots from 8 different IP addresses, all blacklisted after having submitted dozens of fraudulent forum memberships globally. They typically show up as "Registering".

Kinda BS.

99%+ get filtered out before they can register due to bot filters that are setup. For the occasional one that gets through, they're manually banned, typically before their bot is able to complete the registration. Fortunately, the forum really isn't that active anymore, so it's pretty easy to pick off the spam registrations from the legitimate ones.

Realized that some people can't see all the crap I do. It's down to ~6 now, a great reduction. Here is a screenshot.
