Question to which I might have the answer but unsure.

Friend of mine wants to burn a CD of his own music (him and his band) from his home computer but every time they make a CD, all the tracks are listed as:

Track01.cda
Track02.cda
Track03.cda
Track04.cda
etc

None of the album titles, artist names, and song titles are showing up.

So I'm guessing that it's the type of CD that he is purchasing from what I have read so far online. He needs to buy a Red Book physical format for audio CDs (a/k/a CD-DA).

Is this correct - the problem solved as easy as that?

Uh, not following you. Google for CD TEXT.

I think when you look at a CD using a computer, it's always gonna show what he's seeing.

Nope, even after burning the CD and opening it with dMC Audio CD Input or dBpowerAMP Music Converter; no track title info is showing up.

I'm talking about burning WAVs and not MP3s so id3 don't count.

Without doing a CDDB lookup, you can't get the titles of the tracks to show up on digital media players. You would need to have your disc show up in the CDDB before that could happen.

But when you buy a brand new CD - the track info is embedded no? Or is it just too automatic now a days that all players go straight to CDDB?

Automatic. All players go to CDDB.

At least that is my opinion.

All tracks do not have info. Ther is the ID2 and ID3 tags I believe that can be embedded in an MP3, but not on a raw CD track.

THOSE need an active lookup (as shifty mentioned) going to CDDB. When you rip (with most programs) they will look for info on the disk by going there and embed it for you according to the format you specefied. Very handy.

So what's the unique info on the raw cd that allows an accurate lookup? Is it the volume name?

Apparently not:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDDB#How_CDDB_works

It's an ID based on number of tracks and track length.

Hehe, I thought so. That is why they ask you if something just happens to be exactly the same as another song.....

Well my friend should have uploaded his album to CDDB last Friday. So we'll see if this week all is good.
