Guess I wasn't the only one thinking it:

Do you not believe in locked-in syndrome, or is it just in this case? What about the paralyzed guy who wrote the butterfly and the bell jar? Wasn't there a movie made from that book. He wrote the book just by moving his eyes.
I had an uncle who fell down the stairs and could only move his foot. (which means he wasn't technically paralyzed because he could move his foot.) We would ask him questions and he would move his foot in one direction for yes and in the other direction for no. Soon, he had a stroke and couldn't even move his foot. I swear he knew everything going on around him. He just couldn't tell us. He lasted like that for a very long time. I guess you would have to be there to know what it's like to know that someone is aware, even if they appear to not be...
With that said, I think the simple test hermer suggests is a great idea!

I don't think he is the one doing the talking is my only point.
The video here shows him "typing" with his eyes closed:

The article doesn't say if they performed that test that was suggested by hermer. It did say that in some cases what they did may work, just not in this one. Your gut reaction was right! :)
